How to Cope When Life Feels Unfair and Unexplained

Is there always a reason behind what happens to us? We’re often told that if we do good, good things will come to us. If we stay on the right path, life will reward us. It would be comforting if that were always true. At least then, when something awful happens, you could tell yourself it’s payback for something you did. That kind of logic would make pain more straightforward to explain.

The truth is, sometimes, bad things just happen, without warning, without logic, and definitely without fairness. And life doesn’t always come with answers. Things happen that don’t make sense, no matter how hard you search for a reason.

I used to spend so much time trying to understand my pain. I kept asking Why me? I believed there had to be a reason behind every hardship. I thought that if I searched hard enough, I’d find it, and maybe it would help me heal.

However, the answers never came.

Instead, the silence turned into self-doubt. I started to think maybe I wasn’t good enough. Maybe I didn’t deserve good things. Perhaps, I was the problem.

That’s the most dangerous place you can end up when pain convinces you to question your worth.

So here’s what I’ve come to believe: sometimes, things don’t happen for a reason. They just happen.

And no, that doesn’t make them less painful. But it takes away the pressure of trying to find meaning in everything. It frees you from holding on to questions that may never be answered.

Believing there’s a reason can give us comfort, yes, but clinging too tightly to that idea when no answers come can lead to deeper pain.

So what if we let go of needing to know why?

What if we simply accept that life is a mix of joy and sorrow, wins and losses? That good and evil coexist. That we don’t always get to choose what happens, but we can choose how we respond.

If you ever wonder, Why me?, consider: If not you, then who? Would you wish your pain on someone you love? Your child? Your sibling? Your friend?

Life doesn’t pick favorites.

So when bad things come, remind yourself that it’s not about what you deserve. It’s not always about karma or destiny or lessons. Sometimes, it’s just life.

You can’t control everything. But you can control how you heal. You can choose to stop torturing yourself with the need for explanations and instead, focus on surviving, healing, and slowly rebuilding.

Be grateful for the good when it comes. Be strong when things go wrong.

Some things just happen. And that’s okay.

Take a moment: What’s one thing in your life you’ve been struggling to explain or make sense of? Journal about it, or share it in the comments below. Sometimes, putting it into words is the first step toward peace.
